On your transformation journey, you need to have a vision and goals to work towards. Otherwise, your dreams will stay just dreams. So if you want to be successful, you need to follow some of the basic rules of success. That’s why, in this post, I will answer the following questions:
- Why is it important that goals be measurable?
- What are measurable goals?
- What kind of personal goals should you set to level up?
Let’s dive right in…
What Are Measurable Goals?
You may have heard the acronym SMART when it comes to setting and achieving goals. It stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely. Although this strategy is mainly used in business, I really like using it for personal development goals, fashion make-overs, networking, and even etiquette transformations.
The S in SMART is for specificity. That means your goal has to be something that others would easily understand if you explain it to them. It’s not vague or unclear. For example, a specific goal can be something like “completing finishing school.” A more ambiguous goal would sound like “be classier.” What does “classier” mean and how would you measure it? As you can see, a specific goal is something you can measure, while a vague one is more difficult to define and track.
Since we’re focusing on the measurable goals aspect of this technique, let me quickly explain how the A, R, and T part of the goal work:
Achievable means it’s a goal that you believe you can reach. You have the time, money, or other resources needed, or at least have a plan of how to get them. And realistic means it’s something that makes sense for your situation, dreams, and needs. Timely goals have a start and end date.
This brings us back to the most important part of transformation: measuring your progress.
How To Create Measurable Personal Goals
Let’s take the “completing finishing school” example again. That’s a measurable goal because you can break down the progress into milestones, which might include:
- Setting a budget
- Researching the best finishing schools in this budget range
- Planning the time off you need to attend the courses and do the work
- Preparing all the necessary materials and prerequisites
- Completing all coursework
- Passing a final exam to earn a certificate
As you can see, each one of these milestones is a SMART goal in its own right. You can measure each one. And as you attain each one you are able to measure your progress towards the main goal as well.
The following is a list of leveling-up goals you can draw inspiration from:
- Whitening your teeth
- Learning a new language
- Relocating to a city with more opportunities
- Getting a good education
- Starting a skincare routine
- Saving up for a classic capsule wardrobe
- Learning about your networking type
- Getting a personal trainer
- Investing in quality hairstyling tools
- Finding a good nail technician
There are many more I can think of. But the point is to come up with your own measurable personal goals that will slowly but surely lead you to your dream life. It’s your time now, you’re ready for the next step!
