From Plain Jane to Elegant Lady (part 3)

Today, I want to talk about the important topic of elegant makeup.

What type of makeup does the typical elegant, classy lady wear? What is her secret to looking so refined?

Natural makeup is the answer.

Sorry to disappoint all the makeup lovers out there, but if you want to look like a proper elegant lady then less is more.

Clear skin, defined eyebrows, long eyelashes and a slight touch of colour on your cheeks is enough. They don’t do that much more unless they’re going out in the evening.

I cannot count the amount of times I have heard men praise women who wear less makeup, and I actually understand why!

Makeup can be a big deal breaker. You have to make it look classy and be wise with how much you apply.

Never wear bad makeup.

We can all agree that bad makeup will make any lady look trashy!

But not everyone knows how to do makeup like a pro. For this reason, it is important to perfect your skills by practising often at home and also watching YouTube tutorials. There are plenty of them out there!

Get familiar with your face, as it is your canvas. That is my main advice. Learn what to enhance and what to conceal.

The good thing about elegant makeup is that you do not need to learn anything complicated. Everything is quite basic, but you need to learn how to master those basics like a pro. Make that your top priority!

Never apply too much makeup. Too much makeup is the enemy if you want to achieve a classy look.

It is also a typical beginner’s mistake to think that you will look better the more make up you apply.

People pay attention to ladies who are plastered in layers of foundations, powder, colours, eyeshadow and lipstick for all the wrong reasons.

People assume that these ladies are trying too hard to cover up their true selves. They are either hiding some major flaw or are too insecure to be natural.

Show who you are. Natural beauty does not need coverage, it just needs to be enhanced. We all have something beautiful in us, but we just need the confidence to show it and be the elegant ladies we truly are.

Wear discreet makeup. True classy ladies show off their beauty without adding tonnes of layers of makeup. If you go to a high society event, you’ll notice how all the socialites are careful with their makeup. If for some reason they want to wear heavier make up, they make sure the end result looks natural and modest.

Elegant daytime makeup:

You do not need all those foundations, powders, bronzers, blushers, contouring tools and eye makeup combined together! You want to be able to look flawless in natural lighting. The foundation and powder should not be visible.

I understand you might need some foundation, concealer or powder due to skin imperfections, but make sure to find one that gives you a natural result. Another option is to use a tinted day cream instead of a foundation. It gives you a little bit of colour and evens out your skin tone. I think adding a little bit of blusher and bronzer can be beneficial if you make it look discreet and use the perfect amount. Remember to blend properly!

For eyes, eyelash extensions could be a great addition. You won’t need to worry about wearing mascara to define your eyes! You wont need to worry about wearing any form of eye makeup at all during the day. Leave the eye shadows and eye liners for the evening, unless you choose very natural colours that do not stand out.

Eyebrows should always be perfectly groomed and tinted. If necessary, you can fill them with an eyebrow pencil or shadow. But please, avoid sharp lines!

As for lips, thankfully we have ditched the days of wearing thick layers of lipgloss and instead we have a more sophisticated trend going on with tinted lip balms and lipsticks. For day time, I believe you should wear your natural lip colour or slightly enhance it with a tint.

Elegant evening makeup:

I would not recommend adding more layers to your complexion in the evening.

Depending on your surrounding lighting, a thick layer of foundation and powder may not look as good as when you left your house. I would also avoid heavy contouring as it gives an unnatural result. Again, we want to look naturally beautiful instead of faking our beauty.

For eyes, I’d recommend going with natural colours depending on your skin tone. You can play around depending on how much you wish to define your eyes. I like grey or brown colours mixed with lighter shades. I believe the key is to define your eye without adding so much that your eyes are completely masked.

Eyeliner can be a great addition when you are using eye shadow, but I would apply it with absolute care. Do investigate your eye shape and what your end result should be like. If you want more of a cat-eye look, then analyse how it is best to apply the liner to achieve that according to your eye shape.

If you want to look more minimal, then you do not really need any eye makeup for night time. It all depends on your outfit and overall look! A smokey eye can look very sophisticated if worn with a sleek outfit. With a more ‘busy’ outfit, it can look very trashy. Definitely experiment and find what works for your look!

As for lips, in the evening you can be more bold and wear red lipstick or other vibrant colours. Even pale lips are nice in the evening if you are wearing stronger eye makeup. Do not wear bold lipstick together with heavy eye makeup. As a rule, I never combine the two!

To conclude, less is always more and never be afraid of showing your true self. Make use of what you have and enhance it. Everything else will follow!
